Dhananjay Mohanty

Late Dhananjaya Mohanty was born on 6th June 1915 at Panposh. Since his school days he was very active in freedom movement. After completion of schooling and law education, he concentrated more on peasant movement of Adivasis of the district.

He had a role into bringing the Amko – Simko massacre (firing by Britishers to the gathering of the tribal peasants in the year 1939) to the lime light. He was the man who dared to bring this tragic matter the notice of Mahatma Gandhi while Mr. Gandhi was travelling to Kolkata (Calcutta) via Rourkela in train. Consequent upon this the Amko – Simko incident got national coverage. Due to the effort of Late Mohanty 49 victims of the massacre have so far got the Status of freedom fighter.

Apart from being a freedom fighter he was active in Trade Union movement in the district by establishing the Hindustan Steel Workers Union and became its founder president. He was also the architect of the formation of Quarry Mazdoor Sangha in 1943 for the development of quarry / mines labourers.

In post independence era he was actively associated with many socio-cultural organizations, Trade-union movements, Rourkela Bar Association etc.

As he was active in freedom movement, he was also a member of Indian National Congress and worked in different posts of the organisation. He was member of Rajya Sabha from 1961 to 1964 and Member of Orissa Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1977 representing Rourkela Assembly Constituency.

Till his last breathing (14th Feb , 1991) he was active in social activities and working for upliftment of poor and Adivasis (tribals) of the District.
