Rourkela Municipality
The local self government for urban and rural areas of the Sundergarh district was established in pre-independence period. But after independence and creation of Sundergarh as a separate district on 1st January 1948, the Local Self Government system in the district got revamped. At present there are four Urban Local bodies in the district, as detailed below.
The Rourkela Notified Area Council (NAC) was constituted in the year 1955. In 1963 another Notified Area Council for Steel Township NAC ( ST ) was formed. After this formation there are two NAC named as NAC (Civil Township) and NAC (Steel Township) came into existence at Rourkela. After the growth of population , Government of Orissa upgraded NAC (Civil Township) to a Municipality in the year 1989. In the year 1995, when Rourkela Steel Township declared as Industrial Township then the establishment of NAC (ST) merged with Rourkela Municipality. In the year 2008 urban local body election Rourkela Municipality wards are reconstituted with 33 wards from earlier 32 wards.

Sundargarh Municipality was established in the year 1951. Initially there were 10 Wards in this civic body, but as per the election held in the year 2008, there are 19 Wards in this Municipality. The names of the councillors are given below.
One of the oldest towns of the Sundergarh District is Rajgangpur. The Rajgangpur Municipality came into operation in the year 1969. Initially there were 12 Wards but as per the election held in the year 2008 there are 19 Wards in this municipality. The names of the councillors are given below.
