Injustice to Rourkela City
Few years back while ing on internet on Rourkela , I landed on a website known as www.rourkela.com, which was founded by Shri Natwar Lath, a well known Chartered Accountant of Rourkela. According to the website the area of Rourkela City was approximately 200 square kms. This data is also confirmed by Wikipedia. Hence we can say that upto 2001 Census ,Rourkela was the largest city in the state (areawise). In 2004, a tourism report published in The Telegraph , by Kaushik Ghosh indicated the area of Rourkela "Town" to be 45 square kms.!! I think he must have been provided with the data of Steel Township only. The leading information website of Rourkela www.indiapamc.com reports Rourkela of having an area of 115 square kms while some other websites relate it to 125 square kms. City allowance for employees has not been provided by the State Givernment hence all the non rourkelites and people residing in Rourkela but devoted to other areas e.g. Katak, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur,Bolangir,Berhampur etc. are very happy as Rourkela has not yet officially conferred the "city" status . The major injustice done to Rourkela City was in 1995,when Rourkela NAC was broken down into Industrial Township and Municipal Township and South Rourkela was denied any administrative control. 2001 Census, the major population areas were Rourkela Industrial Township Rourkela Town Panposh Census Town Hatibandha Census Town Jalda Census Town Lathikata Census Town Bondamunda is a part of Rourkela Municipality but hardly anyone knows it. Panposh is always depicted as other area from Rourkela in maps both national and state. Many times Greater Rourkela has been talked about including Fertilizer Township,Kalunga etc. Let these guys know that Fertilizer was always a part of captive township of the Steel Plant and now it is Sector-22. Also it was planned to upgarde Rourkela to a municipal corporation of 42 wards including Kalunga ,Kuarmunda but was cleverly put aside stating that the local people do not want it,which is also true Now these Panchayat areas like Kalunga,Kuarmunda,Hatibandha,Jagda,Jhirpani etc are suffering from acute water shortage like the slum areas of Rourkela as there is no governing authority for them i.e. Rourkela Steel Plant or Municipality Here is a report on Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in Daily Pioneer Census: New capital steals a march over old Susim C Sahani | Bhubaneswar Going by the statistics drawn, the Census-2011 tumbles down some amazing facts. Given the figures of the Census since 1961-2001, an interesting comparison between the Cuttack and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporations can be drawn. As per the findings made by the incumbent Director Census Bishnupada Sethi, the Millennium City or Silver City of Cuttack, also the erstwhile State capital, had a population of 1,46,308 while the Temple City of Bhubaneswar, the present State capital, had a mere 38,211 during the 1961 Census. However, the Bhubaneswar population had a steep growth to match with that of Cuttack by 1991 as the Census figures stood at Cuttack with 4,08,869 while Bhubaneswar 4,11,542, but the population of Bhubaneswar city overtook that of Cuttack’s by the 2001 Census with the figures standing at 6,48,032 and 5,34,654 respectively. As far as the area is concerned, Cuttack city had an area of 59.57 sq km during the 1961 Census and expanded to 149.16 sq km in the 2001 Census while Bhubaneswar city that had an area of 50.25 sq km during 1961 got expanded to134.64 sq km during 2001. More interestingly, even though the new capital had an area of 14.52 sq km less than that of the old capital, it had a population of 1,13,378 more than its old counterpart during the 2001 Census. During the 1961 Census, the population density of the Silver City had been 2,456 persons per square kilometer that increased to 3,584 during the 2001 Census. But, the Temple City had a tremendous growth in comparison to the former. While in 1961, the latter had a density of only 760 persons per square kilometre, it went up to 4,813 during the 2001 Census. Moreover, Bhubaneswar city had NAC status till 1971 Census and remained as Municipality during 1981 and 1991 Census, but was counted as Municipal Corporation during the 2001 Census while Cuttack city was treated as Municipality during the 1961, 1971, 1981 and 1991 Censuses and was counted as Municipal Corporation in the 2001 Census. Hence this Census should be the most important and it should be noted that no one excluded, else Rourkela cannot get its fair chance |
