Vedavyas

Mythological background

The name coined after the great sage Vyashadeva who wrote the great epic Mahabharat. It is situated 13 km away from Rourkela Railway Station and Rourkela New Bus Stand. The place has of immense importance because it is situated in the side of confluence of three rivers Sankha, Koel and underground Saraswati with the creation of Brahmani River. The name Brahmani coined after the great sage and Brahman Vyasha Dev. A cave that existed in the riverbank hill which still exists called as Vyasha cave. It is believed the sage Vyasha Deva was living in the said cave and wrote the great epic Mahabharat. Due to soil erosion the said cave is now inaccessible. It also believed that an underground tunnel was there between the river and cave by which the sage used to worship the god without the knowledge of general public.

The place Vedavyas is also having number of temples dedicated to different gods. Near the river bank a Sankirtan mandap is there where round the clock Sankirtan is going on for last 13 years.

The Vedavyas Trust Board is managing the pilgrimage. Thousand of pilgrims come to this holy place every day to solemnize marriages, thread ceremony, and other rituals as well as for general visit. Almost every day death rituals (cremation) are also performed near the river bank. An Electric Chullah is also established by Government of Orissa which is yet to be fully operational.

This place has also importance particularly at the time of Sivaratri. During the said time a big festival is organized here in which lakhs of visitors visit this place. This festival called Sivaratri Mela attracts number of visitors and devotees from neighboring districts as well as neighboring state of Jharkhand and Chhatisgarh. During festival period the local administration takes care of Law & order and sanitation arrangements. In mela numbers of small and medium businessmen open their stalls which get sizeable business. The said fair runs for 10 to 14 days on the river bank of Brahmani.

Nearby to this place a Vedic Ashram and Gurukul Ashram is also established where teaching in Sanskrit and other Vedic subjects are taught . Hundreds of students from Primary to High school level are imparted here on Vedic courses under the guidance of learned Vedic scholars and Sanskrit pandits.

Near by this Ashram a Sanskrit College is also established to teach various course on Sanskrit which is recognised by Government of Orissa.

Another important visiting place near this Ashram on the way to Vedavyas is Goshala. Around thousands of cattle including cow recovered by Cow lovers and Volunteers stay here with beautiful environment. All the cattle are worshipped here like god and goddess. Number of regular programmes organised by this Goshala for awareness of Go-sampad among the human being as well its advantage. A flute player is appointed by Goshala management for creation of peaceful environment for cattle.

The following rituals can be performed at Vedavyash Temples by paying requisite fees at the Vedavyash Trust Board office , which is situated near the entrance towards the Vedavyash Temple complex.

How to reach there

One can go to Vedavyas from Vedavyas Chowk which is on NH – 23, from Ranchi and Sambalpur square. Vedavyas is near about 1.5 kilometers from the said chowk which is accessible through Autorickshaw or Cyclerickshaw or by local bus.
